The Overview
Icily TV partnered with the Sharks to create a dynamic and interactive fan experience at the stadium. Through live-to-screen activations, Icily TV worked closely
with the Sharks’ media and events team to introduce two exciting new features: FanCam and FanPostUp. These interactive services enabled fans to control the
big screen in real-time, fostering a unique connection between the audience and the game. This collaboration marked a first for South Africa, empowering fans
to become part of the action and contribute to the energy of the game.
The Challenge
The biggest challenges for Icily TV came from the technical constraints of the stadium environment. Radio frequencies within the stadium are extremely problematic due to the presence of concrete, as well as the numerous other service providers on game day, often causing interference that makes it difficult to send and receive high-quality video feeds. Communication among the event crew was another major hurdle, as the stadium’s concrete structure made it difficult for communication systems to function effectively over long distances. The challenges presented by these technical limitations required creative solutions to ensure smooth, real-time execution of the FanCam and FanPostUp features.
The Solution
Icily TV’s team designed and installed a custom fiber cabling system throughout the stadium to prevent video signal interruptions and ensure a stable connection for all cameras, audio equipment, and other devices. This installation enabled us to send multiple live feeds of the match to various screens throughout the stadium.
To manage interactive services effectively, Icily TV set up a control room that allows the team to monitor the entire field and make real-time adjustments. We also overhauled the communication system, laying it out in specific areas to guarantee that everyone from the DJ in the grandstands to the camera operators and event crew could receive clear communication wherever they were in the stadium.
To keep costs down while still delivering high-quality production, we utilized strategic PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras that provided shots from different angles. This approach offered fans an immersive and dynamic viewing experience without exceeding the budget.
