The Overview
Polocam TV is a specialized broadcasting service focused on providing live and on-demand coverage of polo matches to audiences worldwide. In partnership with respected organizations such as Guards Polo Club and Global Polo Entertainment, Polocam TV has streamed prestigious tournaments like the Cartier Queen’s Cup and the Aston Martin Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. Their mission is to make polo more accessible by utilizing advanced technology to broadcast matches across various platforms, including ESPN, Disney+, and PoloLine, among others.
The Challenge
Broadcasting polo presents a unique set of challenges. Matches often take place in remote locations with little to no broadcast infrastructure or internet connectivity, making it difficult to transmit high-quality video feeds. Additionally, the fast-paced nature of the sport and the unique conditions of the matches make it challenging to run cables to camera positions and use traditional broadcast equipment. During tournaments, multiple matches are often played in different countries back-to-back, making it logistically impossible to rely on conventional outside broadcasting (OB) units. The challenge for Polocam TV was to find a solution that would provide seamless, high-quality coverage while remaining cost-effective and highly mobile.
The Solution
With the knowledge and the specialty systems that Polocam TV brought to the table, Icily TV was able to adapt its cutting-edge remote production workflow to utilize LiveU technology. The key to this solution was deploying LiveU LU600 units with bonded LTE, which combined four SIM cards for redundancy and speed, ensuring a stable, high-quality video signal. A satellite transmission system was also included as a backup measure for further redundancy.
The LiveU system allowed camera operators to be deployed anywhere in the world while sending multiple live feeds, complete with audio and commentary, directly to a centralized studio. This studio, managed by a single technician, oversaw the entire broadcast remotely. This setup drastically reduced the need for large production teams and expensive outside broadcast units, making the operation much more cost-effective.
Additionally, communication between the production team and camera operators was seamless, allowing for real-time direction and coordination, which ensured a smooth live broadcast experience. Polocam TV also utilized multiple studio locations to provide backup and redundancy, allowing for the simultaneous broadcast of multiple games without disruption.
The Results
Polocam TV has successfully broadcast numerous polo matches worldwide, ensuring high uptime and uninterrupted coverage. The LiveU system has proven to be a game-changer, allowing matches to be covered from remote locations while maintaining a professional, high-quality broadcast.
By eliminating the need for traditional OB units, Polocam TV has significantly reduced operational costs while improving flexibility. The seamless communication and redundancy measures ensured that no game was ever missed, regardless of the location, enabling the team to produce matches across the UK, Nigeria, and Australia directly from South Africa.
